I keep seeing them advertised and hearing about them all over the city. It's some sort of pita right? Sorry if this sounds like a dumb post (maybe it is) but I just moved here.

Yes it's usually a spiced beef/lamb mixture cooked on a spit-type thing, comes in a pita with tomatoes, onions and a sweet white garlic cream sauce on it. They're awesome! ;D

It is somewhat local for sure, you can get them in other areas but they have different names and most often a different sauce (creamy cucumber crap) on them. They're called Huro's or hero's some places.......can't remember some other names I've heard ;D

Any greco has awesome donairs...and in the states tehy are called Gyros (greek word with a wierd pronunciation that I can't type). They are highly addictive, though!!! You will become very poor trying to satisfy your craving!! hehehe..but they are possibly one of the best after-drunk food...damn....now I want one

Hehe...how funny this should come up.
I recently took the advice of some guys I work with, they were going on about how BIG the donairs are at Roberts donair and Pizza on Windmill road.
Well I went for it...Got a medium donair....damn it was big... I took it home and sat down to chow down. I was reading the paper and hogging into with a fork. About halfway thru my donair I just happened to look at the fork with my next bite on it and Whoa..WTF...A nice big black pubic hair was there...imbeded thru a chunk of donair meat...baked right into the shiat. I'm not into eating big black pubic hairs with my food....go figure eh.
Well, I was grossed out as you can imagine...I placed the chunk on a napkin and wrapped it up with the remain of the donair and took it back to Roberts. He said it wsn't his, I said its gotta be...its right thru the meat man... He said impossible, and he would make me another donair. I said no thanks, and I won't be back and I'mm telling everyone that ask me about donairs.
So there you go....
Don't go to Roberts (Pubic Hair) Donair.

They're called Huro's or hero's some places.......can't remember some other names I've heard ;D Donairs are a greek dish. It's basically a pressed beef or pork meatloaf, cooked on a spit and shaved off. The shaved meat is served on a pita or flatbread. Generally donair toppings include ognions, tomatoes, cheese and sometimes even lettuce or cabbage. They're served with a sweet sauce (Donair), or yogurt sauce (gyro) to give added flavour. Places outside the maritimes where you would find Donairs or Gyro's are rare. Pita Pizzaz makes great stuff. Most Greek restaurants will have Donairs or Gyros if they serve traditional dishes. Places around here to find good Donairs: Grecco, Toulany's. If you're in halifax, there's a greek restaurant on Barrington St that has half decent grub. Hope this helps!
